Wrought iron and ornamental steel fencing add a lot to a property, but the metal does take maintenance. The good news: most common problems are very repairable, and because gates and fences are fixed in place, they're ideal for on-site welding.
Common Wrought Iron Problems
- Sagging gates. Over time a gate's weight pulls on its hinges and joints, causing it to drag or stop latching.
- Broken welds. The joints where pickets meet rails crack and separate, especially on older or heavily used gates.
- Rust damage. Moisture works into joints and bases, weakening the metal and staining the finish.
- Bent or damaged sections. Vehicle bumps, storms or impacts bend pickets, rails or posts.
- Failing hinges and latches. Hardware wears out or tears loose from the frame.
What Repair Involves
A typical repair starts with assessing why the part failed — a sagging gate, for example, is often a hinge or post problem as much as a gate problem. The welder cleans the joint, re-welds broken connections, replaces or reinforces damaged sections, and re-squares the gate so it hangs and latches correctly. Done right, the repaired joint is as strong as or stronger than the original.
Repair or Replace?
Wrought iron is usually worth repairing. The material is durable, and matching new welds into existing fencing is far cheaper than replacing a whole run.
